There are names every guitar player recognizes, Marshall, Soldano, Mesa Boogie, Bogner and on and on.. The builders that became part of rock and metal history and whose name every player knows.
And there are the ones that exist out on the fringes, short lived and or rare examples of gear that didn’t quite meet the mainstream for one reason or another.
Some are pieces that a relatively small number of players own, play but wouldn’t trade for just about anything..
Todd Langner's DCP-1 tube preamp is one of these.
If you spend enough time lurking through the depths of guitar forums, chatting with longtime rack gear users, or looking through the collections guitar players who were there during late 80s and early 90s rack mount era, there is a standout.
Those who own a Langner hold on them tight, those who sold theirs wish they hadn't.
And people who never owned one often spent years looking for one.
One of these stories led me to build the Lambda Engineering LTP-1.
Todd Langner, a guitarist and engineer from the Bay Area, his name would become associated with the world of modified high-gain amplifiers and boutique audio gear.
Langner's involvement with ADA and the MP-1 is part of a somewhat complicated history, and some of the stories surrounding him have become embellished so to speak over the years. But there is good surviving documentation with firsthand accounts that he was involved with ADA's development and service work and was responsible for a significant amount of circuit design within that ecosystem.
The ADA gear community still discusses his involvement to this day.
Eventually Langner started building and marketing his own gear.
His DCP-1 was an extremely limited production run of hand-built, all-tube rack mount preamp using five 12AX7s. It featured independent clean and overdrive channels with boost functions and was capable of an enormous range of usable gain.
On paper, it sounds like many other high-gain rack preamps from the era.
If you have ever played through one you know that it is something considerably more, unusual..
For the uninitiated, If you dive into the discussions in the online guitar related forums they are filled with comments of owners of the DCP-1 with descriptors being thrown about such as “exceptionally aggressive, tight, responsive, and capable of enormous amounts of gain while retaining a distinctive feel and clarity.”
One user recounted searching for one for six years before finally finding one.. six years!
In discussion from way back in 2012 comparing the DCP-1 Creator and Elite versions, users were discussing the ridiculous amount of gain that DCP-1 was capable of.
One owner summed up the experience rather well: the DCP-1 was a "gain monster," with a “very usable clean channel” and an “unusually powerful tone stack”.
That theme continues on and on in recent discussions as you dig down the rabbit hole that is the Langner DCP-1.
This idea that a 30+ year old obscure, simple 2 channel preamp has such a cult following hooked me.. I started my own search for one.
There were 2 advertised circuit versions of the DCP-1, the Creator and Elite.
The majority if the preamp architecture very similar, although some minor changes like the tone stack capacitor values were updated and some switching/control functionality were also added.
Side by side the Creator unit is quite aggressive and open, while the Elite has a better, less sterile clean channel and a somewhat darker and rounder overdrive.
The evolution of the circuit had me looking at the DCP-1 in its short life cycle as a dynamic improvement project.
There may be relatively few DCP-1 off Todd’s bench that are exactly the same whether they are Elite or Creator models.
They are Langner DCP-1s, each with their own respective personality.
The Thrash Connection:
To understand the DCP-1, it helps to understand where and when it came from.
The Bay Area in the late 80s and early 90s was an extraordinary place for heavy guitar based music.
Exodus, Testament, Forbidden, Death Angel
And many other bands were pushing guitar into territory that traditional British and American amplifiers weren't necessarily tailored for.
Todd Langner was smack in the middle of that scene.
His work would become associated with the likes of Gary Holt, (Exodus) Glen Alvelais, (Forbidden) and others coming out of the Bay Area..
That connection is important because it puts the DCP-1 into some context.
Todd’s ideas were fostered from a community of guitarists who were pushing the boundaries of what metal was. This was the perfect place and time for the DCP-1 with its copious amounts of tight, aggressive overdrive to be brought to life.
Fade to Black:
Over time, musical landscapes changed and the demand for rack gear evaporated. There wasn't a massive company behind it and although the exact production number of the original DCP-1 is unknown, it’s possible fewer than 100 were built. The Langner DCP-1 was slated to become footnote of guitar related obscure gear.
Sadly, Todd passed away in 2016. His unique gear has become increasingly difficult to find.
Over the last 10 years there has been a following and mythology growing specifically around the DCP-1.
Back in 2012, owners in forums were discussing used examples selling for $1,700, $2,300, and even higher, despite the fact that the original retail price had been nowhere near those numbers.
In 2023, a discussion about several DCP-1 Creators described the units as historically significant and extremely rare, with asking prices reaching several thousand dollars on multiple trading sites.
In 2024, collectors were still listing Langner DCP-1s among their rarest and most obscure pieces of equipment with online prices hovering near $4k USD.
As of this writing there was a listing on an auction site for over $15k USD. As incredible as that seems, I think it shows that there is a such sense of rarity that someone might actually pay that much for a unit.
By 2021 and 2022, the DCP-1 had made its way into discussions on the Fractal Audio forum.
Fractal owners were asking for the DCP-1 to be modeled digitally. Why? Because there just isn’t anything else like it.
A piece of analog rack gear from 3 decades ago was rare enough that people were asking a modern digital modeling company to recreate it because they couldn't get their hands on the real thing.
Why did I build the LTP-1?
As a builder and designer I didn’t want to manufacture another generic high-gain tube preamp. There are already plenty of those around.
I became interested in the DCP-1 of what it represented.
It is a piece of guitar related engineering history that has physically dwindled to a handful of working examples and the unique tube distortion it capable of making, there just isn't anything else quite like it.
Created by a guy who was both a musician and an engineer, working in an incredibly creative period of guitar amplification and in the middle of the Bay Area Thrash music scene.
As I have gone through both circuits, I gained a real appreciation for what Langner was doing.
I wanted to overcome the DCP-1 obvious practical problems, mainly there are very few available..
The originals are rare, they are expensive, they're decades old with aging components. The power supplies weren't designed with the expectations we have for modern gear.
And even finding one isn’t exactly easy, and if your are lucky enough to come across a clean working example, it most likely wont be budget friendly.
So when it came down to building upon what the DCP-1 was , I did not want a cheap 1:1 copy. My goal was a modern device built around the ideas that made the original special, and to make it affordable for a the working musician.
Lambda Engineering LTP-1.
This history and mind set is the reason the LTP-1 exists in its current form.
I wanted to preserve the character and architecture of the original design while addressing the realities of building and maintaining a piece of equipment today.
Updated modern power supply and filtering. Improved grounding scheme, lower noise floor, component quality, reliability and serviceability.
All the details that matter whether on the stage in the studio, our rocking out at home.
The surviving DCP-1s themselves demonstrate that Todd frequently experimented, modified and refined his designs, so the LTP-1 takes inspiration from that evolution.
The clean channel incorporates later Elite-era design, while the overdrive channel shares much of the original 1992-era DCP-1 circuit along with some updates that make the LTP-1 unique in its own right.
The result are my interpretation of what this design can be today.
I never had the opportunity to meet Todd.
But sometimes life doesn't give us those opportunities. So instead, we study whats left behind.
A Bay Area musician and friend of Todd's contacted me after seeing my LTP-1.
I sent him some photos and one of the LTP-1 tube PCB, on that board I have silkscreened

That conversation meant a lot to me.
Someone who spent his life experimenting with guitar electronics, who created some of most amazing shred tones that don’t really have an equal.
And here decades later, I am holding a version of that circuit, helping telling this story about Todd and his wonderful designs.
I'm at a different point in life, and maybe that's part of why this project means so much to me.
I've spent years repairing gear, modifying amps, and designing guitar electronics on a small scale.
I had been looking for creative outlet beyond what I have working on, the LTP-1 has become that outlet for the time being.
It's a way to take something I believe deserves to be remembered and give it another life.
My LTP-1 preamps have slowly found their way to musicians all over the US, which I have been incredibly thankful for.

I don’t know how many I eventually will end up building, but for now this has been quite the project and a hell of a lot of fun.
